Training for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of sexually-transmitted diseases
The fight against sexually-transmitted diseases requires increased efforts regarding prevention and awareness. To help win the fight, Total is contributing to the training of medical and paramedical personnel in Angola, Iran and Morocco.
In a bid to increase awareness among the younger sectors of the population regarding the dangers of sexually-transmitted diseases (STDs) and to improve prevention and screening procedures, Total Exploration Production Angola has established a partnership with a local youth-oriented NGO, the CAJ, whose mission is to provide adolescents with information and advice on sexual and reproductive health. The partnership also involves a training programme for doctors and healthcare workers. This programme, which has the approval of the Institut Pasteur, has been developed and locally deployed by the IMEDA (International Medical Alliance) with the assistance of the Angolan health ministry and the regional office of the WHO.
Total’s support will also allow the CAJ to renovate and re-equip its training centres for STD screening, with improved access to care and information for the youth of Luanda.

Containing and limiting risk factors for the spread of sexually-transmitted diseases is the objective of a new partnership signed with Moroccan anti-AIDS association ALCS, which operates an HIV/AIDS prevention programme directed at Moroccan long-distance truck drivers that includes extensive health monitoring. A tripartite steering committee will be appointed to oversee the project.

In a further instance of cooperation with the Institut Pasteur, Total is implementing a series of on-site actions designed to strengthen existing infrastructure and to provide healthcare personnel with the training they need. These projects are already in place in Cameroon and the Centrafrica Republic.
